Meet finches

We currently have about 12 zebra finches up for adoption. They were brought to us by a hoarder, but are in shockingly good shape!
If you've been thinking about adding zebra finches to your life, now is the perfect time to do so!
Please stop by if you'd like to add some joy to your home in the guise of these little treasures!

Society Finches

We have several society finches up for adoption. These birds were very well taken care of, but their owners realized they no longer had the time to give them the attention they were used to.Please stop by if you have questions about them. We can teach you how to properly care for these energetic birds!

Aftermath of a hoarding situation

Last week, we got a call from animal control in another county. Over 40 birds had been found in deplorable condition. Their owner realized they needed help and agreed to sign over the birds to us.
The birds were fed a diet of canned cat food and sunflower seeds. As parrots are mainly herbavores, this was not good.
The birds had many wounds, recent and healed. It appears that some occurred when they attempted to flap their wings while housed in too-small cages and other occurred from fights.
These birds are not yet up for adoption, but will be shortly. We were already full at the Center, so these additional birds are placing strain on our resources as several will likely require expensive vet care to get them healthy again.
In just a few short days, they have shown remarkable improvement. Parrots are incredibly resilient and these guys just need the right homes to come around. We are working with several other parrot rescues near us that share our values, in hopes of reaching a broader range of potential homes to get them placed more quickly.
These pictures were taken at the Center, in their travel cages, before we did intakes on them.

Alumni story: Chipper

The best part of what we do is when a bird finds a great home. We love hearing success stories and post some here when given permission. Especially when there are adorable pictures!

The reason that Chipper found a home was a sad one, but turned out to be good luck for him. A family had a happy flock of four finches. One died after spending several days at the vet, and they wanted to even up the numbers again in order to have harmony. That was Chip's lucky break.

Here are all four of the finches. Their owner had rearranged all of the cage furnishings in hopes of lessening any territoriality and aiding finch friendships to form.

If you look closely, you can see parts of all four finches in this picture:
Here's Chipper, the CARE alum and new bird on the block:
And here is Chipper with his new flockmate, Holmes:
Chipper's owner discovered that he loves cucumbers, so he now gets them regularly. What a lucky bird he was to have found his way to such a wonderful home!

Finches, finches everywhere!

Late last week, we had 35 zebra finches surrendered to us. Their previous owners started with a pair, and liked watching them breed and raise young. Predictably, the situation soon got out of control and these birds ceased receiving the care they require. One had a beak that had been so overgrown that it curled around itself -- we have no idea how he could eat.

This individual developed health problems and was told they couldn't return home from the hospital until all of the birds were out of their house.

In the few days these birds have been with us, they have already perked up and are looking better. They're hoping 2009 will be the year they find loving homes!

Obviously, we have separated the males and females. There is already a finch overpopulation problem, and this sad example shows how many young even one mixed-sex pair can create.

Here are the males:
And the females:If you'd like to adopt a same-sex pair of zebra finches, please stop by. These cheerful creatures with their incessant beeping can brighten up your day!

Here is a video of some of the finches that we have up for adoption. In the beginning, you hear many of the sounds of other birds in the aviary, but towards the end, you can hear the delightful beeping of these finches.

UPDATE: Millie and Cleo have been adopted, and are in their new home! We love happy endings here!

This past weekend, we had 23 birds surrendered to us, and an additional 13 so far this week, with more scheduled. 17 of those were zebra finches, which means that we now have 28 zebra finches up for adoption. If you have been considering adding some of these charming little beepers to your life, you could not find a better time than now!

If you are experiencing behavior problems with your parrot and are considering surrendering him or her, please contact us about a behavioral consultation. We would much rather work with you to help you keep your bird. Unfortunately, the avian community is reaching a point where there are so many unwanted parrots and not enough qualified homes available. And with the long life spans of these wild animals, things are only going to get worse.

We currently have quite a few finches available for adoption. Stop by if you'd like to see them!

In order: green singing finch, zebra finch, shafttail finches.

Finches can add a touch of the wild to your home, without requiring the hands-on attention of parrots! I haven't had time to look through this whole link, but here is some information about finches. The parts I read sounded correct, but please stop by if you have any questions!

We currently have six society finches up for adoption. We just love how pretty this picture turned out -- and we were able to capture5 of the 6 birds in this picture!

These birds were very well taken care of and are eating an excellent diet.

If you are interested in adopting these finches or any other birds at our Center, please fill out a Bird Wanted Questionnaire.

This picture was taken last Saturday of some finches that were surrendered to the Center. Finches move so quickly -- this wasn't the picture we'd intended on taking, but it was pretty fun to see! The 2 female finches have found their new homes, but we still have 2 male zebra finches that are up for adoption. If you'd like to meet them, please stop by the Center!
