Meet Audrey

Audrey and her mate are a former breeding pair of Maximilian pionus parrots who were surrendered to another rescue. That rescue transferred Audrey to us and kept the male, hoping that, separated, they have a better chance at happiness.
As might be suspected, Audrey is not tame. However, parrots are extremely resilient, and in the right, patient, home, we know that she will bloom and can find happiness. If you've got a lot of patience and understanding, and want to be part of a huge transformation, Audrey may be the bird for you. Before she goes to her new home, we need to talk carefully with the prospective owners so they know what to expect. While the rewards are great, it can also be challenging.

Meet Periwinkle

Meet Periwinkle, an approximately 5-6 year old blue headed pionus. Isn't she incredibly gorgeous? She also has an intoxicating musky scent she emits when she's happy.Peri lived in a home with another pionus who had been there first. Unfortunately, this other pionus did not like Peri and did everything he could to drive her out of the house. Her owner surrendered her to us for her safety.

Although she is very sweet, she is also very loud. Although pionus are frequently said to be good birds for people who live in apartments, that is not the case for her! She has a loud scream when she is unhappy. This is something that her new family will have to work with her to reduce.

She is also extremely intelligent, so will thrive in a home who will work with her to learn tricks and provide an enriching environment.

Peri will be at the Pet Expo this weekend (more information in yesterday's post), so if you'd like to meet her, stop by our booth! After this weekend, she will be at the Center, as usual.

Meet Phoenix

Meet Phoenix, an approximately 4 year old bronze-winged pionus. Like many parrots surrendered to CARE, Phoenix is not here due to any behavior problems. His owner tragically and unexpectedly died, leaving him homeless.Phoenix is tame and loves attention. He's a little nervous at the Center due to the commotion and the big change from his quiet previous home. He also was never in her cage at home. At one point, his owner had been clicker training her and he'd probably love to start that up again.

Please stop by if you'd like to meet Phoenix!

UPDATE: Phoenix is a male, so I've changed the pronouns.

Meet Mocha

Meet Mocha, an approximately 6 year old white capped pionus that is up for adoption. We don't know if Mocha is male or female. She is tame and a very sweet bird.
If your flock has room for Mocha, we'd love for you to stop by and meet her and see if she is the right fit for your house.

Meet Mason

Mason is a bronze-wing pionus. We adopted him out several years ago, but he was returned to us because his family lived in an apartment and he was too noisy.

Pionus are often touted as good apartment birds, but we are finding that not to be the case. These guys are a lot louder than their reputation!Mason is a bit cage aggressive, but is very sweet and tame once he's out of his cage.

We're now looking for the perfect home for him again -- one without shared walls since he's a lot louder than he looks!

Stop by to meet him if you're interested in adding a pionus to your family!

Meet Keegan

Meet Keegan, a white-capped pionus who's approximately 4 years old. Actually, we featured Keegan on this blog several years ago, as an alum. Like all adoptions, when it happened, we hoped that Keegan would live out his life in that family. However, that didn't happen in his case.

He's a victim of family upheaval -- his owners are getting divorced and no one was able to take him with them.
When I put my hand in his cage to have him step up, he ran over and jumped on my hand -- perhaps he remembered being here before? He then started emitting this wonderful happy Pionus scent. Yum!His previous owners reported that he can be cage aggressive at times, but other than that is a very sweet bird.

Pionus have incredible feather coloring that this photographer didn't do justice to. He is inquisitive and intelligent and will really thrive in a loving, stable home. If you think that might describe your house, stop by to meet him to see if sparks fly!

As a follow-up to the previous two days' entries, Mango did well at the vet, so now we are waiting on results of bloodwork and pathology.

Sophie is an adorable 2-year-old bronze wing pionus. She was hand-fed, but not handled much, so she hasn't yet learned that interacting with people can be a positive experience!

Volunteers have been working with her, and she is now happily stepping up! We are still working on stepping up out of her cage.

Sophie will thrive in a home with caring, understanding people that can help her to reach her full potential!

On a side note, CARE will be appearing at the Wisconsin State Fair during the run of the fair. Stop by and say hello!

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering at CARE is when a parrot falls in love with and gets adopted by a new family! We love hearing updates of how our alumni are doing, and it's so much fun when they come for a visit!

Keegan, the white-capped pionus pictured here, was adopted into a loving family last year. He came to visit last Saturday for a nail trim, and we got to see how beautiful he is. He gets tons of attention and is starting to speak. He loves every member of his new family and is very gentle with the children. Additionally, his family has begun clicker training him, to let his intelligence shine through!

Pionus parrots can make fantastic pets. They are a manageable size and often have gentle demeanors. They are extremely intelligent and not too loud! They are also gorgeous, especially when natural light reflects off of their feathers.

A big thank you goes out to Keegan's new family for providing him with such a fantastic life!
