Meet Bones

Meet Bones, an adult male iguana. Like Barley, he was found outside as a stray, so we don't have any information on him. We are getting to know his personality as he recovers his strength with us.

Bones definitely requires an experienced iguana keeper. We'd love to find him a new home soon, due to caging concerns that will happen once it gets cooler outside. We'll be able to make it work for him, but it would be much better if he can just go into a home before needing to be moved again.

Please contact us if you'd like to meet Bones. This gorgeous fellow is looking for someone committed who won't just release him when the going gets rough!

Meet Barley

Meet Barley, an iguana that we have up for adoption. She was a stray that was found outside, so we don't have a lot of information on her background. Or any information, actually!Animal control had her, and she was to be euthanized if we wouldn't take her, so she's here and looking for a good home.

She is young, and is handleable, though not super tame. It follows that someone who would let her go outside probably wasn't handling her enough to keep her tame, though she's made good progress while with us.

Please stop by if you'd like to meet Barley, or the other iguana we have up for adoption (we'll introduce you to him in the next few days.)

Iguanas are not easy pets to keep -- they grow quite large and have important dietary and lighting needs! If you're new to iguanas, and think it would be fun to have one, please read through this site first. If you have any care questions after reading that, please contact us and we can help you to decide if Barley might be the right companion for you!

Gizmo Update

It's been awhile since our last update on Gizmo. She is doing incredibly well and is all ready to go to a new home!As she's gotten healthy again, it's been wonderful to watch her transformation -- she put on some much needed weight, shed her skin, revealing a brilliant green color, and perked up her personality.

What a pleasure it has been having her with us; hopefully she will soon be in a loving family!

Another Gizmo Update

I know we've been posting pretty regularly about Gizmo, the iguana that will be up for adoption sometime later this summer. Yes, we mostly do parrots, but she has just captivated us with her wonderful personality!

Yesterday, we put her harness on her and she went for a walk outside. The sunlight is wonderful for her, and it's great for her to get exercise. In her cage, she's still learning how to balance without her tail, but on the ground, she doesn't have those issues!

After her walk, she got sprayed with a water bottle -- notice how she positions her head just so in order to get the water where she wants it:

Gizmo Update

Gizmo had surgery about 10 days ago to remove her tail. The break wasn't healing, and our vet was worried that serious complication could occur if her tail wasn't removed.
She is recovering well. She is not yet up for adoption, as we need to make sure that her surgery site has completely healed. We'll keep you updated on her progress!

Meet Gizmo

Gizmo is a 10-12 year old female iguana. Birds are 99% of what we do here, but we occasionally will help with another animal in need, as long as it doesn't hinder what we can do for the birds. Iguanas are herbivores, and the birds instinctively know that she is not a threat. They look upon her with interest -- no fear at all!Gizmo was well-loved, but surrendered because her owners realized that she had some major health problems. They couldn't afford her vet work. She is emaciated, extremely constipated, and her tail is broken in two pieces.

The first two issues are likely due to insufficient light and heat. Her owners had placed the proper lighting in her cage, but it was too high, so she was unable to reach it to get the benefit. Getting the environment right for reptiles is so important, yet it can be tricky and is frequently not attained.

Because she was fed a great diet, her bones look fantastic. She's just dealing with a bit of mouth rot, which should clear up shortly. Right now, we are feeding her a good diet and soaking her frequently in hopes that she will eliminate.

Here she is, being carried on her way to her soaking:

Once she is no longer constipated (which should be any day now!), our vet will splint her tail. We're hoping that it can be fixed that way; if not, we will end up having to amputate her tail.

We'll keep you updated on her progress. She is one of the sweetest iguanas around! Once she's healthy again, we'll be looking for a retirement home for her to live out her days.
