Society Finches

We have several society finches up for adoption. These birds were very well taken care of, but their owners realized they no longer had the time to give them the attention they were used to.Please stop by if you have questions about them. We can teach you how to properly care for these energetic birds!

Meet Ace

Ace is yet another of the 18 birds saved from the same home. We're still getting to know him. He seemed to grieve for the first few days/weeks he was here, but he's starting to open up to us now.
He's a bit cage aggressive, though this could have something to do with the fact that he had been kept in a very small cage. We're hoping that putting him in a larger cage will help to alleviate some of this problem.

He is very interested in people, and will move to the side of the cage to be closer to people he likes. He will also comment (by making noises) on the goings-on around the Center.
We suspect there is an extremely intelligent, loving personality waiting to come out once he feels secure again.

Darla, a lesser-sulfur-crested cockatoo, is another of the 18 birds. As we find out more about her personality, we will post it here.

Meet Holly

Meet Holly, a severe macaw that was among the 18 birds discussed here.

Holly is considered special needs. She has pretty severe arthritis in her legs, for which she is currently receiving pain medication, as well as a dislocated hip. Our vet thinks that this hip was dislocated a long time ago; sadly there is nothing we can do for her now.

However, because parrots are extremely resilient, Holly has adapted well to her disability. She loves to hang from the top of her cage, and fell in love with a swinging perch we placed in her cage. When she perches on you, it seems more comfortable for her to also hold your hand. She does not grip as well as other parrots, so you have to walk slowly and be more careful when she's perched on you. She does not need any cage modifications at this time.

Holly is not quite ready for her forever home, as we need to work out her medication/arthritis issues with regards to necessity and dosing.
Of all of the birds rescued from that home, Holly appears to be the oldest -- probably around 30 or so. However, this is just a guess based on her condition.

Meet Daisy

Meet Daisy, a citron cockatoo. She is yet another of the 18 birds we discussed here.So far, like the others, she has been very sweet; it's obvious that she received love and good care at some point in her life. We're looking to find that for her again!
As we learn more about Daisy's personality, we'll post updates on this blog!

Meet Kiki

Kiki is a double yellow headed amazon that came from the situation we discussed here. She is a delight to be around, and we suspect her personality will only improve as we transition her to a good diet and she starts receiving attention again.Kiki does have some minor health problems, likely caused from a poor diet. She is currently on medication and not quite yet up for adoption -- we need to get her healthy first.

Canaries

Here are some pictures of the canaries rescued from the situation we discussed here. Our vet said they were in surprisingly good condition, given the environment they'd been living in.They're looking better every day! We suspect they are rather old, but have no way of knowing.
They are ready to go and looking for a place to live out their lives. Please stop by if you'd like to adopt one of them. We can help you to set up a proper cage and teach you what you need to know to care for them properly.
Who wants a little bit of sunshine in their life?

Meet Periwinkle

Meet Periwinkle, an approximately 5-6 year old blue headed pionus. Isn't she incredibly gorgeous? She also has an intoxicating musky scent she emits when she's happy.Peri lived in a home with another pionus who had been there first. Unfortunately, this other pionus did not like Peri and did everything he could to drive her out of the house. Her owner surrendered her to us for her safety.

Although she is very sweet, she is also very loud. Although pionus are frequently said to be good birds for people who live in apartments, that is not the case for her! She has a loud scream when she is unhappy. This is something that her new family will have to work with her to reduce.

She is also extremely intelligent, so will thrive in a home who will work with her to learn tricks and provide an enriching environment.

Peri will be at the Pet Expo this weekend (more information in yesterday's post), so if you'd like to meet her, stop by our booth! After this weekend, she will be at the Center, as usual.

Life With Ben

One of our amazing volunteers has written a book called Life With Ben: A Story of Friendship and Feathers. You can meet the author, Jessica Hagedorn, at the Great Lakes Pet Expo this Saturday, February 5, from 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm at the CARE booth. Here is a picture of Jessica with Ben:
You can click on this link for more information about the expo -- it's held at State Fair Park at the Wisconsin Exposition Center.

We hope to see you there -- it's a great place to meet different rescue groups and help animals. We will be there selling food, toys, and other bird products (all proceeds directly support CARE.)

And it's a chance to meet Jessica and get an autographed copy of her heart-warming book!

Canary

This canary was one of the 18 birds impounded, that we mentioned here. We could not believe how long one of his nails had gotten:We groomed him and he is doing much better; perching is now much easier for him! We will update you on the other birds in the upcoming weeks. It's been a busy few days at the Center!
