Meet Dustin

Meet Dustin, an approximately 2 year old Hoffman's conure. (Get his name?) Hoffman's belong to the quieter Pyrrhura family, like green cheek conures, as opposed to the louder Aratinga family, like cherry-head conures. They can still be noisy, but usually not at the same level as the Aratingas!

Dustin was purchased because his owner wanted to breed Hoffman's conures. However, after this individual thought about the overpopulation of parrots that already exists, she decided not to add to the problem and to surrender Dustin so he can live out his life as part of a family.
We are still getting to know Dustin. He is a little flighty, but appears to love being with people. Once he gets used to being around people, he will settle down even more and we suspect he'll make a great addition to someone's family! If you'd like to meet him, please stop by!

Charlie Update

We last wrote about Charlie a few months ago here. Charlie is healthy and off of medical hold. The volunteers can't believe she's still here -- timnehs are usually adopted very quickly.

Over the past few months, we've gotten to know Charlie, and she is very sweet and adorable. She loves to make kiss sounds; frequently she'll give several in a row -- just because she's happy to see you!Charlie is currently missing some of her head feathers which has created the effect of male pattern baldness. There is no medical reason for this, and we have not seen her rubbing against anything in her cage. We suspect it's due to a cluster molt.
If you'd like to meet Charlie, please stop by. Greys do much better in a home environment than at the Center, so we'd like to get her settled in to her new home soon.

Meet Kiwi

Meet Kiwi, a lovebird who was hatched on 9/23/10. Not even 7 months old, and she's already lost her home! Kiwi was surrendered to us because her owner's roommate didn't like her, and would cover Kiwi during the day. Her owner realized this was not fair to Kiwi and wanted her to have a better life. Kiwi is a bit jumpy, but has not shown any aggression. She will calm down as she becomes accustomed to being around friendly people.Kiwi and Janet were both out exploring together:Please stop by if you'd like to meet Kiwi or Janet!

Meet Janet

Meet Janet, a young lovebird. She's probably around 6 months old. She was dumped at our table after a bird fair -- her breeder couldn't sell her and didn't want to pay to keep feeding her.Janet does not appear to have had proper socialization as a youngster, so she is a bit jumpy; however, she has not shown aggression. We are working with her on learning to step up. She apparently wants to start with advanced topics, like accounting, but we're going to start with the basics! Please stop by if you'd like to meet Janet!

Meet Tommy

Meet Tommy, an approximately 6 year old quaker parakeet. We've talked before about parrots who are victims of divorce (like Oscar) when the adults in their life split up and neither one wants the bird. Tommy had the opposite problem. His owner met someone who had dogs. She feared for Tommy's life, so she surrendered him.
He's very sweet and steps happily up out of his cage. He does get a bit grumpy when you put your hands in to change his food and water, but a work-around could easily be developed for that -- take him out of his cage before you service it and the problem is solved!
As you can see from these pictures, Tommy loves to explore! He is a very energetic and curious parrot.
He's very dedicated and would love to find someone who will commit to him! Stop by if you'd like to meet Tommy, or any of the other quakers we have up for adoption.

Meet Polly

Meet Polly, an approximately 13 year old quaker parakeet. Just like Rex and Spenser, she is very tame and friendly. Her previous owner told us that a few years ago they had her outside, unrestrained. A hawk grabbed her and then dropped her when the humans screamed. Just another reminder of how important it is to always have parrots in a secure carrier or harness while outside! Polly is a ham. She loves to laugh and interact with people. She has a sparkling personality and will brighten her new home. Right now, we have some really nice quakers for adoption. If you've been thinking about adding one to your house, there has never been a better time. We can work with you to see who will work best in your household.

Meet Spenser

Meet Spenser, an approximately 18 year old quaker parakeet. He lived in the same home his entire life until being surrendered to us recently.Spenser is tame and friendly. He is used to being out of his cage most of the day. At one point in his life, Spenser had a broken wing. This does not impact him currently, though it's unlikely he would be able to fly. (His new owners will still need to take precautions and not allow him outside unless he is in a secure harness or carrier.) Please stop by if you'd like to meet Spenser!

Meet Rex

Just a warning: I may gush a little on this post, but I cannot help myself where Rex is concerned! Rex is an approximately 5 year old quaker parakeet. As you can see, his chest is plucked, and his feathers will likely not grow back. When I went to take a picture of him in his cage, he ran to the front of his cage and kept putting his foot up, a clear sign he wanted to come out. Quakers are notoriously cage-aggressive, but not Rex!I took Rex out and was in for a treat. He is extremely personable. He talks (though some of it in unintelligible). He particularly loves to tell us what a good boy he is!
He also joins in the laughter and wants to be a part of the action.

I do not understand how anyone could have surrendered Rex! He is so delightful and will fill his new home with joy, love, and laughter.

If he were fully feathered, he'd probably be adopted out this week; unfortunately, plucked birds tend to take longer to find a home. That's a real shame, as Rex is so delightful! If you have room in your home and heart for Rex and can look past his plucked exterior, stop by to meet him. He's a treat!

Quaker party

We have so many friendly, tame quakers right now. There has never been a better time to add one to your house! Over the next few days, we'll introduce you to these beauties! These guys are very charming and are looking for a home of their own. Stay tuned to meet them!

Meet Bridget

Meet Bridget, a Vosmaeri Eclectus who was hatched on 12/19/94, which makes her 16 years old. She and Bo lived in the same home. Their owner had hoped to breed them, but luckily was unsuccessful. Although they've lived together their entire lives, they are not bonded and will be adopted to different homes.Bridget can be a bit unpredictable and temperamental. We're looking for an experienced ekkie home for her. She is handleable, but sometimes prefers not to be. Her new owner will need to become proficient in her body language in order to have a harmonious life together. Please stop by if you'd like to meet Bridget.

Meet Bo

Bo is an approximately 16 year old male Vosmaeri Eclectus. As you can see, he's plucked out most of his chest feathers and we're not sure whether they will grow back.Bo is incredibly sweet and has a fantastic personality. He loves being out of his cage and getting lots of attention! Bo also can be very loud, especially when he thinks he's being ignored. Here is an example of his mischievousness. He was standing on the counter while volunteers were putting price tags on toys to be sold in the store. Bo went over, grabbed the price tags and started chewing them! (Sorry the picture is a bit back-lit.! Ekkies have different dietary needs than most parrots. While the person who adopts Bo does not necessarily have to have eclectus experience, they will have to educate themselves on the eclectus diet -- we can help you with that. Please stop by if you'd like to meet Bo. He will make a tremendous addition to some lucky family!

Meet Jo

Meet Jo, an approximately 28 year old severe macaw. Jo was in very bad shape when she was surrendered to us. With proper care and a good diet, we're hoping to turn around some of the damage that was done to her in her previous home. It's too late for her eyes, however. Jo was fed a very poor diet the effects of which, over time, led to fatty lipid deposits in her eyes. There is no way to fix this, and her vet has described the impact to her as always looking through a dirty window. Jo is still settling in. Her release paperwork said that she preferred men, but she has not shown that preference at the Center. She is a little hesitant coming out of her cage, but she loves being out. She has not shown any aggression and has been very gentle with the volunteers. Severe macaws tend to be one-person birds, though we're not sure if this will be true of Jo -- she's still showing us her true personality. Please stop by if you'd like to meet her!

Meet Mork

Meet Mork, an approximately 30 year old Patagonian Conure. Mork spent the last 18 years in the same home and was surrendered to us when his previous owner died. We are looking for a retirement home for Mork as he is nearing the end of his lifespan.Mork is very affectionate. He loves getting head scratches from the volunteers! He prefers to be out of his cage and a witness to the action. He doesn't want to be left out! It can be a bit tricky to get him back in his cage, as he is sneaky and tries to run out to the cage door before you can close it. Mork is extremely plucked and will probably not regrow those feathers, but we always say it's what's on the inside that counts, and Mork has a stunning personality. Please stop by if you'd like to provide Mork a home to live out his final years. We'd like to try to place him quickly so his new family can enjoy as much time as possible with him.

Meet Petri

Meet Petri, an approximately 13 year old blue and gold macaw. She is tame and handleable, but can be a bit unpredictable at times. It's important to watch her body language at all times and not let her too close to your face! She loved her female owner in her previous home, but didn't like the man.
Petri will thrive in the right environment -- a home with large bird experience that can help guide her to acceptable behavior. We're still getting to know her, but from the glint in her eye, I'm sure we'll be updating about her antics, unless she quickly finds a home!

Please stop by if you'd like to meet her.

Meet Taz

Meet Taz, a female double-yellow-headed amazon. She's approximately 45-50 years old. Taz prefers women, and can be handled, although usually prefers not to be.We're looking for a retirement home for her -- a place where she can be allowed to just be -- with no expectations. A home that will allow her to set the pace. We're guessing a wonderful friendship will form from such an arrangement.

Perky Update

Perky, who we last wrote about here, is back at CARE. He became hormonal at the home he'd been at for a few years and started showing aggressive behaviors. They were not willing to work with him on these issues, and instead decided to return him to us.

Given his background and the fact that we don't want him bouncing around from home to home, we've decided that the best option for Perky is to be placed in a sanctuary. Cockatoo Rescue and Sanctuary is willing to take him into their program. This will give him the opportunity to interact with other birds and live a life closer to one he'd have in the wild. This was not a decision that we made lightly, but we feel it's in his best interest.

Here is a picture of Perky and another cockatoo at the Center (Snowball) preening each other. We suspect he's really going to like living among his own species!
It will cost around $500 for us to get Perky out to his new home. This includes costs related to his health certificate and vet exam, an airline approved carrier, and airline charges.

If you are able to help by making a tax-deductible donation to cover some of these costs, we would really appreciate it. We hope to be able to share Perky's progress with you over the years at the sanctuary.

You can drop a check off at the Center if you'll be visiting anyway, or mail it to us at: 3053 Beechwood Industrial Court, #1, Hubertus, WI 53033. You can also donate to us through paypal.

Thanks for your support!

Meet Charlie

Charlie is a gorgeous double yellow headed amazon. He was surrendered to a local humane society and then transferred to us. His previous owners didn't leave any information about him -- not even his name! (Edit: after the fact, his owners contacted the local humane society to say his name was Charlie, so I'm changing this post to reflect that.) Right now, all we've heard out of him is "Good boy!" and we reassure him that he is, indeed a good boy.

Charlie is understandably a bit grumpy right now. He hasn't been with us long, so we're letting him settle in and set the pace. Given the amount of yellow coloring on his head and the condition of his feet, we suspect that he's at least 20 years old; likely even older, like 30-40.

He needs a home that will not have any expectations from him. Parrots are incredibly resilient, so who knows how he'll be months or years down the road. Right now, he needs a home that will work with him and not push him too far. We suspect he's seen a lot in his days, and he needs to learn that humans can be nice!

If Charlie sounds like he may be the bird for you, please stop by to meet him!
